Halloween 2014

The problem with plans is that there are expectations that things will work out a certain way.  Plans had been made to trick or treat with some of our friends at their house and there would be fun, dinner and drinks.  Halloween costumes were ready (mine included).  I was excited and the kids were too.

On Halloween Eve, Brandon and I nearly took Berkley to the ER because he couldn’t catch his breath and was wheezing.  A dose of steroids the following morning was administered, and he started to feel better.  After napping and resting, Berkley still wanted to trick or treat to a few houses on our block.  He was too sick and tired to join our party of friends.  While initially we were disappointed, there was beauty in spending Halloween with our family of four and it turned out to be the best one ever.

Berkley has been playing lots of dress up at Sabot.  Putting on plays and acting out many roles with his friends…  So on the night of Halloween he opted to put together pieces to create a “knight.”  Here he is in a Chinese costume from my cousin, Chris and a “soft sword” we discovered a few weeks ago at a toy store.  Berkley has been working on the “soft sword” concept at Sabot.  A group of boys wanted to have a sword fight.  Their teacher encouraged the idea and then asked them to examine their ideas about swords.  The boys discovered that hard swords were not that much fun because they hurt when you were hit.  Berkley and his friends went into the studio with a design for a soft sword.  After cutting and tracing and sewing and foam stuffing (and hours of  work), the boys were ready for their fight…. But then moved on to making bridges because “we have lots of work to do, Mama.”
